Remember, Remember The 5th of November: A Brief Political Commentary   2 comments

Introduction

Today holds a special significance, today is the 5th of November. On this day is a particularly symbolic day, often called The Gunpowder Plot an attempt by an English Catholic superior in an administrative district in England by the name of Guido “Guy” Fawkes, during the years when Protestant Armies and Catholic Armies had nations that predominantly supported one of the two denominations. Guy Fawkes sought to bring about the end of Protestant England, due to the variety of Oppressions the Catholics were enduring leading up to Gunpowder Plot. However, the Gunpowder plot failed and with that Glorious Revolution occurred essentially destroyed any hope of Catholicism re-establishing itself in Britain. Today, we see a return of Guy Fawkes by the 2005 Film V for Vendetta and the subsequent image of Anonymous, whose purpose it is to address the concerns of those Oppressed in this Day and Age.

Anonymous: Its Nature and Recent Goals

Beginning with 2008, the Anonymous collective has become increasingly associated with collaborative, international hacktivism, undertaking protests and other actions, often with the goal of promoting Internet freedom and freedom of speech. Actions credited to “Anonymous” are undertaken by unidentified individuals who apply the Anonymous label to themselves as attribution.

Anonymous is a digital community of hackers who use their knowledge of computer software and computer networking to hack into largely Government and Corporate Networks to unleash havoc and reveal publicly any and all cover-ups that these institutions may have been trying to keep from public scrutiny as well as to unleash essentially retributive punishment for the evils that these institutions use in oppressing the common people. According to RussiaToday this November 5th,

“According to various tweets, blog posts and message across the Web, November 5 will host a series of attacks on various institutions waged by members of the online collective Anonymous. Among the rumored targets this weekend include Fox News, Facebook and a notorious Mexican drug cartel.

Additionally, November 5 is scheduled to be the day that customers of big banks across America have vowed to close down their accounts and transfer their money to smaller institutions in alignment with the growing Occupy movement. Across the Internet and in Occupy encampments across the country, November 5 is being dubbed as Bank Transfer Day, Move Your Money Day and other monikers as part of the Operation Cashback movement.”

In light of these potential attacks that are to occur on this day, we can only wonder if or to what degree they succeed. I speculate in saying this but I do believe that if Anonymous is capable of making these claims, and should they carry them out and even succeed, their power has certainly grown immensely. This November 5th should be interesting, due to the fact that the world stage, is one in which many factors are leading to a convergence in Global Revolution over and against the established Neo-Liberal Agenda of the Western Empire, factors include:

– Perpetual Military Interventionism by the West
– Economic Destabilization in The Americas and Europe (e.g. Inflation, Taxation, Spending, and Austerity)
– Arab Rebellions
– Occupy Movements Increasingly Going Global
– Libertarianism Rising

Anonymous is a group that I feel has good intentions but in a world in which government has grown out of control and is itching to justify draconian measures of control on people I feel like as if we could be walking one step closer to future confrontation and the factors above being hastily realized. As an author from the Distributist Review puts it,

“Anonymous’ involvement with the protests, in a sense, muddies the waters: it’s a genuinely creepy group, committed to genuine anarchy; one of its slogans is ‘We are Legion,’ a reference to what the demons said when Christ was casting them out. I would not want to live in a world where Anonymous had sway. But the reason that they were able to gain a hearing—the reason the Occupations are going forward—is that many non-creepy people are genuinely troubled at the injustice of the current economic system. As is often the case, one evil—economic injustice—has opened the door to another– anarchy.

The moment that one of the Occupiers decides to spice up his revolutionary rhetoric with some actual explosives will be the moment that this movement dies, and he will be the one to have killed it. Of course, an agent-provocateur could easily decide the same thing, and set off a bomb for just that reason. In the Twitterverse, however, nothing (or very little) is hidden that will not be revealed: such a person’s true sympathies would be found out within days, and his attempt would backfire.”

To be clear, I do sympathize however with the Anarchist political philosophy, I do consider myself more so of a Christian Anarchist with the notions of the Catholic Workers Movement in mind. However, on this 5th of November I can only begin to wonder what will become of this day as the world begins to hold its breath and begin to be concerned about the direction the world is headed in. As a Catholic I do chuckle a bit, when I see people post Anti-Catholic Rhetoric only to see those same people celebrate the attempted violent actions of the Provincial English Catholic named Guido “Guy” Fawkes by wearing his mask, and memorializing his actions. In the end as the Old Poem Goes:

“Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…”

But in this case treason, against a system wherein governments are bloated beyond recognition filled to the brim with corruption and collusion with the financial elites and corporate interests, is a good a thing. In keeping in line with Catholic Social Teaching, it has been written in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that,

“The citizen is obliged in conscience not to follow the directives of civil authorities when they are contrary to the demands of the moral order, to the fundamental rights of persons or the teachings of the Gospel. Refusing obedience to civil authorities, when their demands are contrary to those of an upright conscience, finds its justification in the distinction between serving God and serving the political community. “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” “We must obey God rather than men”:

When citizens are under the oppression of a public authority which oversteps its competence, they should still not refuse to give or to do what is objectively demanded of them by the common good; but it is legitimate for them to defend their own rights and those of their fellow citizens against the abuse of this authority within the limits of the natural law and the Law of the Gospel.” – Entry #2242

I conclude my thoughts on this day now with my favorite scene from the V For Vendetta Film:

  1. Thanks for the h/t to my DR piece, and for this informative background article. But…really, anarchism? I know Dorothy Day was one, but my distributism is more Chestertonian. I guess I see disobedience to civil authority as being medicine, not food: if it has to be done, it means that something’s gone wrong, and there’s something to grieve over. That seems like a different kind of thing than what I take to be the anarchist position that all civil authority is illegitimate. Is that where you’re coming from? How do you read the bits in St. Paul’s letters that support the idea that government is part of God’s plan?

Also if you haven’t yet, you should read The Man Who Was Thursday. I bet you’d dig it.

    • God uses the government’s of men, not because they are good but because they exist, wherever people maybe that is God will be as well. Let us keep in mind who tempts Jesus in the Desert with all the Kingdoms of the World. I still recall the Book of Samuel in Chapter 5 verses 5-18 all the problems that government will cause people if they give up on God leading them and rely on a fallible human to guide them. I also still see Government as the institution of Offensive Force, it survives by way theft whether inflation or taxation on the fruits of peoples labor. I believe that God would envision a world where His Love is present, a Love that allows for the full-recognition of choice, the Right to Choose who and what you’ll be associated to and who you will exchange with, and of course that Charitable Love, the only Law is the Natural Law which all would agree to at the very least.

I havent read it yet, I will look into it though, I own “Orthodoxy” and “The Everlasting Man” however.
