Reconciliation #2: Initial Discussion on The Organic Sciences and Spiritual Christianity [2/3]   2 comments

Introduction

This initial Reconciliation attempt will be broken up into 3 Parts. The First Part, will be addressing purely the Issue of Self-Organized Systems and other Network/System Science Principles in the Organic Sciences. The Second Part, will be addressing the Spiritual Parallels drawn from Part-3 of Reconciliation #1 but with more of a focus on the Organic Sciences as it relates to them. The Third Part of this Initial Reconciliation with the Organic Sciences however, would not be a true reconciliation unless we discuss the Principles behind The Theory of Evolution and Spiritual Christian Theology. It is my belief however that The Theory of Evolution is not really at odds with Spiritual Christian Theology, and that the problem really resides in the watering down of Tradition. Throughout this reconciliation their will be links and media presented to you and as with the First Reconciliation every part will have its own conclusions and cited sources at the end of each posted part.

Spiritual Parallels Drawn From the Conclusions of Reconciliation #1

Now specific to this Initial Reconciliation Attempt between the Organic Sciences and Spiritual Christianity we must draw from certain Spiritual-Scientific Parallels I made in the First Reconciliation Attempt between the Inorganic Sciences and Spiritual Christianity, and they are as follows:

1. Creation is in Constant Change, it is not set in stone, it was not just an initial condition and then suddenly order and stability occurred in the Universe. Rather everything happening is happening for a reason, toward the perfection of creation that God envisions…

2. All Things Are Interconnected and All Things Realize Their Purpose Through The Interconnectedness Around Them, No-thing is Self-Sufficient Unto Itself, Only God Is Self-Sufficient.

3. The Natural Order is filled with a Spirit of Spontaneity and that God Himself is Spontaneous in work toward His creation. All things possess an internal principle, called a small tao/logos that is united and working with the Big Tao/Logos.

Having stated what they are now let us look at further Conclusions and Statements that we can draw from the issues specific to the Organic Sciences and a Spiritual Christian Theology and by doing so show the same concepts at work. In Network Science as it related to the Organic Sciences we see that the following principles are present: Robustness, Interconnectedness, Scale-Free Typology, Multi-layered Networks, and finally Synchronization. So where are the spiritual parallels?

Robustness is realized in the all 3 Spiritual Christian Parallels, namely that everything is interconnected, in a state of change, and contains a spontaneous order to them. Robustness is also founded in the Heavenly and Unseen Realms as well. If we understand Sin as a sickness, a perversion in the natural order, a failure, how is creation sustained despite the many failures and extreme situations it is exposed to? How else but through the Spirit of Loving Spontaneity that God is, again all things possess an internal tao/logos and all things are moved by the Supreme Tao/Logos of God.

We have spoken of Interconnectedness in detail with regard to the Inorganic Sciences, now we can apply those same principles in a more Organic context. The animals and plants, realize their purpose and mission only thought their interconnectedness around them, the same would be true of humans if we surrendered the thought that we are complete unto ourselves, this thought is a perversion in the natural order. The Plant cannot realize its mission to grow and produce fruits without the aid of the Sun and the dirt; the animals to cross-pollinate and keep the grounds fertile. Likewise the Animal cannot realize its mission to grow and produce offspring without food and without other animals, it could not have instinctual drives and desires without the presence of something else to share it with. Humans couldn’t climb to the mid and upper levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs without other Humans around them.

With regards to Critical Mass we understand that, true Christian Spirituality sees this concept within its own teaching. Largely through the Book of Acts where a Pharisee goes on to say that, “So my advice is, leave these men alone. Let them go. If they are planning and doing these things merely on their own, it will soon be overthrown. But if it is from God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You may even find yourselves fighting against God!”(Acts 5:38-39) but also consider that the Spirit of Loving Spontaneity which is God, will allow for a flourishing creation itself, that things will gain momentum and through the internal tao/logos principle that is present within all of creation, things will become seemingly self-sustaining even in extreme or hostile conditions.

With regards to Multi-layered Networks it becomes apparent that everything is happening simultaneously and spontaneously, again all things possess this smaller spontaneously ordering principle, namely called the tao/logos. It is through then the presence of the Tao/Logos or the Spirit/Principle of Spontaneity itself that all things emerge in a spontaneously ordered fashion despite the seeming chaos of multiple layers and multiple networks at work and interacting with each other simultaneously.

This then brings me to notions of Synchronization, according to many spiritual Christians through the ages they all speak of prayer and how things come to us in our hour of need, it is a synchronization events when many seemingly disparate events/objects occur into a meaningful coincidence. It is an interesting paradox: When we want something, we struggle to get it; When we [truly and genuinely] need something, we receive it seemingly without effort. For human beings whose wills are aligned with God’s will, St. Maximus the Confessor speaks of how when we sacrifice our Gnomic Will (modern False or Egoic Will) and align ourselves with Our Natural Will (or our inner ordering principle of the tao/logos) we also align ourselves with God’s Will and live as God would live: Spontaneously, or arising from a natural inclination or impulse and not from external incitement or constraint, in a more psychological way, things happen without a conscious attempt at doing it, so one no longer tries to be virtuous one just is virtuous, so long as their not focused upon the Gnomic Will. I have a video here from Fr. Barron again, who has good quality talks in a short time frame concerning issues that I wish to address as well, in this video he talks about the film, “The Adjustment Bureau” and how God’s Will interacts with the Human Will:

Finally we see the idea that in Organic Science the principle of a Scale-Free Network is present in all things and that things are not random. Again Scale-Free Networks, possess certain characteristics: Preferential Attachment, The 80/20 Rule, and Fitness. How can we find a spiritual quality in these things?

Well the characteristic of Preferential Attachment has been given the name of The Matthew Effect, which references Christ’s Teaching in the Gospel of Matthew concerning that, “those who have will be given more, and those who lack will lose what little they have”(Matthew 13:12) However scientists at this moment do not yet agree with the second half of that teaching which is that, “those who lack will lose what little they have.” However, Network Science is still a young science and I look forward to the future in which perhaps they may find a scientific parallel to the second half of the teaching.

The characteristic of The 80/20 Rule is something that even mystics and spiritual seekers of all strands deal with, we could say that 20% of our spiritual efforts can actually account for 80% of our spiritual development or that 20% of the various acts that we do in our life account for 80% of our actual Joy and Happiness. When I say spiritual efforts, I do not necessarily mean that the remaining 80% isn’t necessary but rather that in our fallen-ness it may not be done correctly, in the right way.

The Characteristic of Fitness is found even in the Mystical Body of the Church for does not the Apostle Paul say to the members of the Church that, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2Tim4:7) and does he not tell us to do the same? For it is written even in the Catechism of the Catholic Church that,

“Finally, the People of God shares in the royal office of Christ. He exercises his kingship by drawing all men to himself through his death and Resurrection.Christ, King and Lord of the universe, made himself the servant of all, for he came ‘not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’ For the Christian, ‘to reign is to serve him,’ particularly when serving ‘the poor and the suffering, in whom the Church recognizes the image of her poor and suffering founder.’ The People of God fulfills its royal dignity by a life in keeping with its vocation to serve with Christ.

The sign of the cross makes kings of all those reborn in Christ and the anointing of the Holy Spirit consecrates them as priests, so that, apart from the particular service of our ministry, all spiritual and rational Christians are recognized as members of this royal race and sharers in Christ’s priestly office. What, indeed, is as royal for a soul as to govern the body in obedience to God? and what is as priestly as to dedicate a pure conscience to the Lord and to offer the spotless offerings of devotion on the altar of the heart?” – #786

Our Fitness then, is a fitness not to become Holy out of Pride and looking better then others, but so that the Church may evolve and be uplifted ever closer to God Himself and become a Network of Believers united in the restoration of God’s Order in Our World that acts against or perverts the principles mentioned in this post. For example we are called to Spontaneity in our actions, but our fallen state has us trying to control everything and act in a hyper-conscious manner struggling to achieve the things we want in this life. We are called not to rule over each other or lord things over others but to treat people with a sense of equality and dignity, such is the relationship in a Scale-Free Network. We are called to Robustness, for does not the Psalmist say:

“Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.” – Psalm 1:1-3

Despite all that which happens around him whether something personal (internal) or impersonal (external), he does not fail but continues to prosper. The cell survives, despite failures and extreme circumstances, so is the person called to not merely survive but live despite their own failures in life and any extreme circumstances they may have experienced or have yet to experience.

Conclusion:

We can conclude now the following points from this part of the Reconciliation Process:

(1) Robustness is realized in the all 3 Spiritual Christian Parallels mentioned at the outset of this Part of the Reconciliation, namely that everything is interconnected, in a state of change, and contains a spontaneous order to them. Robustness is also founded in the Heavenly and Unseen Realms as well.

(2) The animals and plants, realize their purpose and mission only thought their interconnectedness around them, the same would be true of humans if we surrendered the thought that we are complete unto ourselves, this thought is a perversion in the natural order.

(3) The Spirit of Loving Spontaneity which is God, will allow for a flourishing creation itself, that things will gain momentum and through the internal tao/logos principle that is present within all of creation, things will become seemingly self-sustaining even in extreme or hostile conditions.

(4) Multi-layered Networks it becomes apparent that everything is happening simultaneously and spontaneously, again all things possess this smaller spontaneously ordering principle, namely called the tao/logos.

(5) This then brings me to notions of Synchronization, according to many spiritual Christians through the ages they all speak of prayer and how things come to us in our hour of need, it is a synchronization events when many seemingly disparate events/objects occur into a meaningful coincidence.

(6) Organic Science the principle of a Scale-Free Network is present in all things and that things are not random. Again Scale-Free Networks, possess certain characteristics: Preferential Attachment, The 80/20 Rule, and Fitness. Each of these characteristics possesses a unique spiritual quality

(7) Our Fitness then, is a fitness not to become Holy out of Pride and looking better then others, but so that the Church may evolve and be uplifted ever closer to God Himself and become a Network of Believers united in the restoration of God’s Order in Our World that acts against or perverts the principles mentioned in this post.
